MPOs and RPOs
Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organizations (MPOs and RPOs) are local planning organizations responsible for regional planning and programming for all modes of transportation.
Purpose and Mission
- Evaluate the performance of regional transportation systems
- Calculate the resources required to maintain, improve, and expand regional transportation facilities
- Work closely with PennDOT on local and statewide transportation matters
Role in the Planning Process
- Update each regional Long-Range Transportation Plan every four or five years
- Update regional Transportation Improvement Programs (TIPs) every two years
- 24 regional TIPs are combined with two statewide TIPs to create the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) or the first four years of the 12-Year Program (TYP)
